About Kedarnath Temple

According to history and mythology, it is believed that after the Kurukshetra War, the Pandavas felt guilty for killing their own brothers and relatives, so they wanted the blessings of Lord Shiva to wash away their sins. But Lord Shiva did not want to meet them and kept moving away from them. To hide, he took the form of a bull and went to Kedarnath Temple, where he mixed with a group of bulls.
The Pandavas understood this and made a plan—Bhima stood with his legs apart and all the bulls were made to pass under him, because they knew Lord Shiva would not go under his legs. All the bulls passed except one, which started sinking into the ground.
Bhima quickly caught it from behind, but only the hump part stayed there, while the rest of the body disappeared into the earth. Later, the other parts of Lord Shiva’s body appeared at different places—his arms at Tungnath Temple, his face at Rudranath Temple, his navel at Madhyamaheshwar Temple, and his hair at Kalpeshwar Temple, and these places are now worshipped as holy temples.

The temple is not directly connected by road, so every traveler has to reach Gaurikund, which is the last point for vehicles. Your taxi will drop you at Sonprayag parking area. Note – If your taxi drops you at Sonprayag or Gaurikund by evening from Rishikesh or Haridwar, you can choose to start your trek at night. Night trekking is often considered one of the best options because there is less crowd, no rush of mules or horses, and the path is more clear and peaceful.
The full trekking route is well-lit with lights, and many small shops remain open at night, so you can get food, tea, and water easily. There are also natural water sources at some places, so you will not face much problem during the journey. but In Kedarnath, it rains a lot and it can start anytime. So if the weather looks clear and you can see stars in the sky at night, only then start your trek. Avoid night trekking during heavy rain.
